Rock of ages by Lisa Del Toro reworks devotional imagery through a tattoo painter’s hand. At the center is a standing female figure with long black hair, bare chest, and a draped cloth at the waist, set against dark water and a low horizon. The mood is calm, but the picture around her stays in motion.

The body carries blue tattooing from shoulder to foot, including a radiant sacred heart on the chest and larger drawn motifs running across the torso, arms, and legs. Waves break hard around the rock beneath her feet. In the corners, Del Toro adds circular scenes that read like flash medallions: a sacred heart with a flower and dagger, a pair of horse heads, a tall ship, and praying hands. Those images widen the piece from a single figure into something closer to a painted sheet of belief, memory, and tradition.

The linework stays crisp even as the painting moves between skin, hair, stone, and water. White foam curls against deep green and black waves, while the gray corner scenes pull the eye back to the center. That mix of controlled drawing and painterly motion feels close to tattoo flash, but it is handled with more atmosphere than a straight wall design.

What makes Rock of ages work is the way Del Toro lets the sacred and the tattooed sit in the same space without softening either one. It feels reverent, weathered, and a little stubborn. Good qualities, generally.
